A Test of the 40D’s AI Servo Mode

This is Paul Burton’s torture test for the AF (autofocus) system on the Canon 40D plus EF 70-200mm f/2.8L combo - shoot two sets of photos of a very challenging subject (a charging black border collie, no less) - see Set #1 | Set #2 - here’s a nice sample, and I like this shot which was taken at f/2.8, wide-open.

Big Thanks go out to Paul for sharing such a huge number of samples. Also, some of the more interesting comments from both forum threads are listed below:

  • Camera settings: Standard picture mode, central focus point only (although Paul admits that he should have been more adventurous and try out the other eight cross-type AF points), f/6.3. Additionally, from the EXIF of the photos at his PBase galleries, you’ll note that ISO was at 400 most of the time.
  • Nomad_68 commented that Paul fared better with his 40D plus EF 70-200mm f/2.8L setup than Nomad with his 30D plus 70-200mm f/4, probably due to the increased sensitivity of the central AF point on the 40D when f/2.8 (or bigger) aperture lenses are used.
  • BryanP is impressed with the apparent focusing accuracy of the 40D, based on these pictures.
