Marvey’s Canon 40D First Impressions, and vs EOS 30D

Here’s a nicely structured and easy-to-digest first impression report of the 40D from Marvey.

Highlights from the report include:

Autofocus – Much faster on the 40D vs the older Canon EOS 30D camera, and most importantly, doesn’t hunt like the 30D. In fact, Marvey says it’s comparable to his old Nikon D2Hs camera (a professional digital SLR aimed primarily at sports shooters). The 40D can also autofocus in relative darkness, something the Canon 30D could not. (Note by David Chin: I can confirm that the 30D is quite weak when it comes to AF in situations with extremely dim lighting. It’s good to hear that the 40D suffers no such drawbacks).

Exposure – Marvey remarks that the 40D’s exposure is much more consistent than the 30D, and not as prone to errors in high contrast scenes.

Caucasian skin tones – There’s still a pinkish hue in Caucasian skin tones, something that’s brought over from the 30D.

LCD screen – LCD color is more accurate than on the 30D, which exhibited a slight greenish cast. The 40D’s LCD is also brighter, although this benefit is slightly offset by the more reflective plastic.

Viewfinder – Definitely bigger than the VF on the 30D

High ISO – 1600 and 3200 – Just a touch noisier than from the 30D if you switch the 40D’s NR (noise reduction) off.

Menu – The new menu system on the 40D makes locating settings very much easier.

Marvey has also provided two 40D photo samples of aquarium fish shot with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens at 1/500th of a second, wide-open f/2.8 and ISO 1600.
