Noise Test: Canon 40D vs Canon 20D
Posted by David Chin on September 3rd, 2007 in Reviews and TestsSteve Grillo posted a link to Canon 40D vs 20D noise comparison samples.
The photos are labeled clearly in his Zenfolio comparison gallery, although you’d have to click each of the thumbnails to determine the camera and ISO for a particular shot.
For convenience, the following are direct links to the comparisons (float your mouse over the image and click Download Original from the slide-in menu):
ISO 400, photo of a frog, daylight: 20D, 40D
ISO 400, incandescent lighting, indoors: 20D, 40D
ISO 800, incandescent lighting, indoors: 20D, 40D
ISO 1600, incandescent lighting, indoors: 20D, 40D
ISO 3200, incandescent lighting, indoors: 20D, 40D
Danbkk calculated the relative exposure from both cameras, and concludes that the 40D seems to be two-thirds of a stop less sensitive than the 20D, which means that the 20D (and also the 30D) might allow for faster shutter speeds at the same ISO compared with the 40D, says Kuivaamo.
Additionally, Buddy Brande remarked that the white balance on the indoor 40D shots seem to fare better than the 20D equivalent, and Steve confirmed that AWB (Automatic White Balance) was used.
